Technology Tuesdays: Saving Energy During the Holiday Season

Hello Partners!

Christmas is just around the corner and while we are busy putting up decorations, planning parties and shopping for loved ones, it is good to remember that there are many ways that we can save energy (and money) during the holidays.

Save on Lighting

First, let’s discuss lighting. It’s difficult to avoid Christmas lights altogether. There is something about the colors that really puts one in the Christmas spirit and brightens up any décor. However, there are ways to incorporate lighting into your Christmas décor without breaking the bank. For example, you can put your lights on timers, so they are not on when they are not needed. Another way to save significantly is to turn indoor lamps off when the Christmas tree it lit. In all likelihood, the tree will light up the room so there is no need to also have floor and table lamps on. Another tip is to opt for LED lighting. As ubiquitous as LED lighting is these days, in my recent trips to the hardware store to purchase Christmas decorations, there was an alarming amount of incandescent lighting available on the shelves. So, be mindful when you are shopping for lights or replacing old ones, to be sure you purchase energy saving LEDs; they will do the job even better than incandescent lamps for a fraction of the cost to operate.

Save on Heating

I would also like to talk about the proverbial elephant in the room. Heating! It is difficult to encourage people to reduce the amount of heating they use in the winter. In the San Joaquin Valley (home of SJVCEO headquarters) we are having the coldest winter season than in recent years. Therefore, the tendency is for people to crank their heaters up! However, there are ways you can save and still be comfortable in your home. For example, take advantage of those large family get-togethers during the holidays and turn the thermostat down. The extra bodies in your home will generate heat and will help keep the ambient temperature comfortable. Also, turn that thermostat down when you are cooking. Indoor cooking generates significant amounts of heat that disperses throughout your home so you can turn your thermostat down and still stay warm. If it is safe, leave the oven door cracked when you are done baking. This will allow more of the heat from inside your oven into the room and warm you up! As I have mentioned in the past, one of the most effective things you can do to save on heating your home is to upgrade your thermostat. Smart Thermostats have the ability to “learn” your habits and account for the most optimal rates and adjust your energy usage without you even having to think about it. The idea of saving money without having to do much is a win in my book.

We hope everyone has a wonderful, safe, and energy efficient holiday season!

The savings never stop!
