Technology Tuesday: Next-Gen Insulation

There are many ways to save energy around your office space that you can’t see. One of the most important of those items is insulation. Insulation is very often out-of-sight and out-of-mind, but its impact can be huge!

There are numerous types of insulation out there: batts, rolls, concrete block, foam board, loose-fill, and blown-in insulation. One of the more recent technologies is Icynene foam insulation; also referred to as next generation insulation.

Icynene can be open cell or closed cell; the difference between the two is microscopic. An open cell foam is made up of cells that are not fully encapsulated which makes for a softer, more flexible foam. A closed cell foam has cells that are completely closed and is generally more rigid and stable. Air and water cannot penetrate a closed cell foam, once installed.

Not only is this type of foam energy efficient and can be installed in one easy step, it also has multiple benefits. For example, Icynene makes a great noise barrier, it can also be effective with moisture and mold control, as well as improve air quality.

Insulation is a very important part of your building’s energy performance and when it is installed correctly, can take considerable load off your HVAC systems.
